Stop Order: Definition, Types, and When to Place
A stop order is an order that becomes executable once a set price has been reached and is then filled at the current market price. A traditional stop order will be filled in its entirety, regardless of any changes in the current market price as the trades are completed. The stop-limit order will be executed at a specified price, or better after a given stop price has been reached. Once the stop price is reached, the stop-limit order becomes a limit order to buy or sell at the limit price or better.
RISKS OF USING STOP ORDERS
Because you’ve placed a stop order, you’ve taken a precautionary measure that can limit your losses or prevent them entirely. There are three types of stop orders you can use when trading, stop-loss, stop-entry, and trailing stop-loss. The Wall Street Journal reports that CEOs had been blowing up White House chief of staff Susie Wiles’s phone in recent days. Business leaders worked on Trump, too, even going so far as to strategically appear on Fox News when they knew the president would be watching.
Understanding the type of order that you use and how to use it, can save you a lot of trouble as depending on the trading platform that you use, some might save you from your own mistakes and others might execute them. The main advantage of a Stop Order is the ability to enter or exit a trade at a future stop price which a trader can set. Stop-Limit orders are an amazing tool but quite dangerous. If you use a Stop-Limit Order as your exit strategy for a buy trade (a stop-loss in oversimplified broker language) then you’re risking your ability to even be able to exit the trade at all. For example, a stock is trading right now at $10 and you believe that if the price moves past $15 then it broke the resistance level and it will continue to climb.

Many brokers now use the term “stop on quote” for their order types to make it clear that types of dojis the stop order will be triggered only when a valid quoted price in the market has been met. For example, if you set a stop order with a stop price of $100, it will be triggered only if a market price of $100 or better is reached. The risks of loss from investing in CFDs can be substantial and the value of your investments may fluctuate. CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how this product works, and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
EUR/CHF crashed nearly 2,000 pips in minutes, wiping out traders who had no stop losses. Many retail accounts went into negative balances, brokers suffered massive losses, and some even went bankrupt. By focusing on market structure rather than a fixed pip distance, you can set stops that align with how the price actually moves, reducing the risk of premature stop-outs.
Selecting Your Stop Price: Strategies for Determination
In calmer markets, the stop price may not be triggered, rendering the order inactive. The order will only be filled if the market price aligns with or exceeds the limit price. Following the activation of the stop price, the limit order dictates the price that the trade will be executed, whether that be buying or selling a stock. For example, a trader may buy a stock and place a stop-loss order with a stop 10% below the stock’s purchase price. Should the stock price drop to that 10% level, the stop-loss order is triggered and the stock would be sold at the best available price.
Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future returns. Sometimes a fast-moving stock can break out so fast your order isn’t executed. So, you need an adequate cushion to account for a rapid rally. Usually, a 2% cushion can work well to catch most breakouts. But on the fast-moving low-priced stocks we love to trade at StocksToTrade Pro, there needs to be at least 1% cushion depending on the liquidity. Less liquid stocks need a bit more room … and we don’t trade the illiquid stocks.
This price is used to limit the maximum price you will pay or the minimum price you will receive for the trade. A time frame must also be set during which the stop-limit order is considered executable. The primary benefit of a stop-limit order is that the trader has precise control over when the order should be filled.
Thus, in a stop-limit order, after the stop price is triggered, the limit order takes effect to ensure that the order is not completed unless the price is at or better than the limit price that the investor has specified. Even if the limit price is available after a stop price has been triggered, your entire order may not be executed if there isn’t enough liquidity at that price. For example, if you wanted to sell 500 shares at a limit price of $75, but only 300 were filled, then you may suffer further losses on the remaining 200 shares. For an example of a stop order, say you want to buy Company B stock, which trades at $25. But you believe that the price will break above that threshold. You can place a (buy) stop order by setting a limit on the price of $26.75 per share for 50 shares.
Are there any risks associated with using stop orders?

- I suggest using this order when you need a trailing stop-loss order.
- However, they can and should evaluate market drops to determine if some action is called for.
- Thus, in a stop-limit order, after the stop price is triggered, the limit order takes effect to ensure that the order is not completed unless the price is at or better than the limit price that the investor has specified.
- For instance, if you wanted to purchase shares of a $100 stock at $100 or less, you can set a limit order that won’t be filled unless the price that you specified (or better) becomes available.
That’s because large institutional traders use these moments to shake out retail traders before pushing price toward its real destination. By establishing a stop price, you create a protective measure against potential losses. If you try to place a pending buy order with a price more expensive than the current price, the trading platform will automatically create a Buy Stop order. Using a limit order would also be impossible, it would get you your specified price or better, so the moment you execute your order it will activate your short sell trade at $25 which is better than $10 when it comes to selling.

The investor specifies the limit price, thus ensuring that the stop-limit order will only be filled at the limit price or better. However, as with any limit order, the risk here is that the order may not get filled at all, leaving the investor stuck with a money-losing position. It is only executable at times when the trade can be performed at the limit price or at a price that is considered more favorable than the limit price. If trading activity causes the price to become unfavorable regarding the limit price, then the activity related to the order will be ceased. By combining the two orders, the investor has much greater precision in executing the trade. The limit price is the price at which you want to buy or sell the security.
The key factor here is that if you have a market position, you need to have a live stop-loss order to protect your investment/position. One of the biggest mistakes I used to make was placing my stop way too close to my entry.
